The number repeated online is approximately 20%. However, there’s no reliable source for that statistic, and per the BBC, the number is likely closer to 66% per a 1993 book by Russian demographers.
Sorry, 1/3 were still alive by the end of the war, per that study.
To be fair, the records aren’t immaculate but the results we found suggest it’s pretty close to that at 32%.
With the famines, the war, the purges and whatnot it was not a happy time to be Soviet.
Let’s say 25%
