My Years 7, 8 and 9 Latin teachers back in the late 1950s would be surprised that I knew that folium means leaf. Defoliate is more often used to talk about vegetation but working on skin would apply. I personally have never tried it.
Exfoliate is a preferred term in skin care. Defoliate is more used when dealing with plant life.
