I thought “Great” was to distinguish it from Lesser Britain (being Ireland), which combined were the British Isles.
But if that is incorrect, I’ll go with the Brittany option.

Called Great Britain because it’s the greater of the two main islands in the British Isles – the land mass known as Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales), and Ireland (Ireland and Northern Ireland)
It is larger than Ireland, but Britain is etymologically connected to Brittany.
But it’s certainly doesn’t imply any positive moral standing. So when people talk about “the Great British Public”, it’s just grandstanding.
It is the largest island in the British Isles.
It is that too.
