Since William the Conqueror took the throne in 1066, to the nearest year, what has been the average length of the reign of an English or British Monarch? (Only counting reigns listed on the royal.uk website.)

    42 monarchs. 958 years.

    Subtract some years for the Commonwealth, add some years for William and Mary co-reigning.

    1. We had to consider a couple of things with this.

      William and Mary ruled as co-monarchs, but Mary died and William continued on his own but there was no transfer of power, so we counted that as one. We also counted Lady Jane Grey, though her rule is disputed by some.

      That makes 42. And we didn’t deduct time for the Commonwealth. When Charles I died, royalists considered Charles II to have become king right then even though Cromwell was in charge.

      That works out to 958 years and 42 monarchs for just short of 23 years.
