When did Visa first sponsor the Olympics? How about the Athens Olympics of 56 BC?

When we asked about the top billed actors in the live action Beauty and the Beast, one team answered with “that guy who was in Downton Abbey”. Sure enough, Dan Stevens was both Beast & Matthew Crawley. So they got a point.

We have often noted the awkwardness of people cheering when they hear the name Hitler as an answer, because even though they’re only cheering that they got a question right, it still feels wrong to be cheering. So we were pleased to hear one audience boo Hitler instead.

A player turned up on crutches with back & neck pain, because he didn’t want to miss the show.

Our leaked current events question didn’t get through to one team, who guessed that instead of having his finger bitten off by a lion, a Jamaican zookeeper burned down the zoo while smoking a joint. Another thought he failed to qualify for the Jamaican bobsled team.

And one of our venues was named pub of the year. PIC. Is it any wonder when you have Australia’s most interesting trivia on your side?

We had a player finally get a bonus question with the correct answer of “Denmark” after dozens of wrong guesses from all parts of the pub, despite the fact that she was wearing the word Denmark on her shirt. All she had to do was stand up and point to herself.

Who shot John Lennon? Lennon Harvey Oswald apparently.

What kind of lettuce is named for the way it was transported to market? Rocket thought one team. Well, that would explain the recent inflation.

We gave people three options on men’s Australian Open winners, and one team decided to go with a fourth option.

Answering a homework question on American Speakers of the House, one team forgot to do their homework and improvised. Their answer… “Nancy Pelosi, white guy, old white guy, straight old white guy.” Which is not exactly “wrong”.

And one team knew there was going to be a “Holiday” question, and found ways to get “holiday” as a guess into about a dozen questions… but not the one where we played a song by Billie Holiday.

Someone guessed that Invictus, the film about the 1995 Rugby World Cup, was directed by Michael Bay. That would have been a VERY different film!

Sisyphus was punished in the underworld by having to answer trivia questions for all eternity.

It wasn’t Gandhi who made the salt march, it was RuPaul. And we have a picture to prove it.

We asked a question about countries close to Helsinki, and a number of teams didn’t notice that one of the picture questions showed a full map of Europe. They seemed to prefer drawing their own horribly inaccurate maps.

We asked about cold temperatures in Australia, and someone asked if Antarctica counted as part of Australia. No. No it doesn’t.

We had a venue flood and had to shout out the answers & results, but we still finished the show.

When we asked about countries of birth of Muslims in Australia, one team asked us if Australia counts as a country.

We asked a question about an American city, and saw that one team gave Mississippi as an answer, so we pointed out that it’s a state not a city. So they changed it to Louisiana… which is also a state not a city.

A team of accountants got a math question horribly wrong, and blamed it on the fact that they didn’t have a spreadsheet.

Which either meant they were hedging their bets, or they really recalled the scene this way.

After getting every element of one of our practical math questions right, one team forgot to actually do the math.

On a question about the most common words ending in OO, one player was wearing a t-shirt with the word “voodoo” on it, and sure enough that was an answer… that his team didn’t go for.

A team who based their team name on the Vatican City… didn’t get a question on the Vatican City.

When answering a question on Sex and the City characters, one team managed to come up with “the bald gay guy” instead of Stanford Blatch, which was not technically wrong.

A bit of advice. If one of your teammates is from India, and tells you the answer to a question is India… IT’S INDIA.

One team put down the two options on the dilemma question, and then forgot to choose one. And the results came down to one vote.

Common four letter words beginning with HO? How about “hoes”. That was a glimpse into the priorities of one of our teams.

Just as we asked a question on Buddy Franklin’s 1,000th AFL goal, the televisions in one of our venues replayed the moment.

Two teams talked themselves out of the same correct answer on a jackpot question.

After choosing Gondor as their special subject, one team failed to correctly answer a question on what Gondor meant. It’s your subject people!

And not quite half of the teams succeeded in naming numbers between 100 & 200 that are divisible by 7.  One bid 14 and named literally none of them, and one bid 8, and went on to name all 14 in 13 seconds.  (He was getting a PhD in math, and was finally able to put that to good use.)
